YAQ is a black and white photo book, shot on film in Palomino, La Guajira, Colombia.
I made this book during a moment when I didn't know what I was doing anymore, as a photographer or otherwise. I packed a camera and went looking for some kind of answer. What came back was this: a sequence of images, almost no words, just two short paragraphs to open and close it. The rest is the photographs talking.
The book moves in three parts. It starts with ¿Qué hago aquí? — the search, the not knowing. Then ¿Dónde estoy? — finding the place, and slowly finding myself in it. And it closes with a kind of calm, ending on the only photo in the whole book where I appear.
The photos in YAQ were taken on film and developed by me, by hand. YAQ is the second book published by Sola, an editorial studio founded by Silvia Camargo that publishes emerging women artists. Silvia designed the book, and it's printed in risograph at Riso EZ390U in Cali — which gives it that soft, grainy, almost pencil-like texture instead of a glossy finish and sown by women in Cali.
